A Profile of Professor Oigiangbe Osawe Nathaniel (The Inaugural Lecturer)

Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma will on Thursday, 28TH November, 2019 hold its 85th Inaugural lecture.  It will be delivered by Professor Oigiangbe Osawe Nathaniel, Professor of Agriculture and Forestry, Department of Zoology, Faculty of Life Sciences.  The lecture is titled: ā€œCrop Protection Practices: Best Options for Nigeria.ā€ The lecture which holds under the Distinguished Chairmanship of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. I.A. Onimawo is scheduled to commence at 2.30pm at the Cordelia Agbebaku Auditorium.

Professor Nathaniel Osawe Oigiangbe, was born on 17th of August, 1959 to the family of Oigiangbe at Iruekpen in Esan West Local Government Area, Edo State.  He had his primary School educaton at Akho primary School in 1971,  and Annunciation Catholic College (ACC) in 1977 Irrua respectively in Esan Central Local Government Area, Edo State.

Through his primary and Secondary education he performed excellently well and this feat ushered in the breakthrough with which he gained admission into the University of Benin, Edo State Nigeria where he bagged B.Sc. (Hons) Zoology in 1983.

In his quest for education, he proceeded to the University of Ibadan, (UI) where he made his M.Sc. (Agric. Biology) Entomology, Ibadan 1986.  Professor Nathaniel O. Oigiangbe thereafter registered for his M.Phil. (Crop protection) Entomology, Ibadan in 1991 and graduated in 1995.  Immediately, he enrolled for his Ph.D (Crop protection) Entomology, Ibadan in 1996 and graduated in the year 2000.

He has successfully supervised over thirty undergraduate projects; seminar topics, one postgraduate Diploma student. He is a prolific writer and he has a number of publications to his credit.  In the International sphere, he has attended many conferences and had 24 journal articles published, 3 books with his papers read in University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ibadan; Durban, South Africa; Palayamkottai, Tamil Nadu, India; Daegu, South Korea; Cuttack, India and Berlin German to mention but a few.

Professor Nathaniel O. Oigiangbe had professional Training qualifications and Diploma in the various discipline stated below:

  1. Statistics and statistical computing course (IITA, Ibadan, Nigeria)
  2. Proposal writing course (IITA, Ibadan, Nigeria)
  3. Research communication skills course (IITA, Ibadan, Nigeria)
  4. Agricultural research Management course (IITA, Ibadan, Nigeria)

He had scholarship, fellowship and prizes as follows:

  • National Merit Award for Undergraduates Studies (Federal Government of Nigeria)
  • Graduate Research Fellowship Award (International Institute of Tropical Agriculture)

Also, he had Honours, Distinctions and Membership of learned Societies thus;

  1. Members, Entomological Society of Nigeria
  2. Members, Nigerian Society for Plant Protection.
  3. Nigerian Field Society.

It is also pertinent to note that Professor Nathaniel O. Oigiangbe was promoted as follows:

He has served the University in several capacities some of which are:

Chairman, Faculty Time-Table Committee, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State. (1988-1990); Departmental Time-Table Officer, Department of Zoology, Ekpoma, (2004-2004); Member Examinations Malpractics Committee, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma (2020-2012); Departmental Representative, Library Committee, Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma (2002-2004); Registration Officer, 300 level students, (2006-2014); Registration Officer, 400 level students, 2014-2016); Seminar/Project Coordinator, Department of Zoology (October, 2006-2012); Head of Department of Zoology (November 2011-October, 2016); Postgraduate Coordinator (June 2012-October, 2016).

He is a Consultant Entomologist: National wide crop pests survey on Rice, Sugar-Cana, Pineapple and sesame (2009-2010); sponsored by the National Plant Quarantine Services, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and National resources, Abuja, Nigeria

Professor Nathaniel O. Oigiangbe is a devoted Christian, he is married to Mrs. Oigiangbe and they are blessed with children and grand children.
