The 54th Inaugural Lecturer, Prof. Sylvanus Ozem Oboh

Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma will on Thursday, 25th August, 2016 hold its 54th Inaugural Lecture to be delivered by Prof. Sylvanus Ozem Oboh, Department of Animal Science, Faculty of Agriculture, Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma. The Lecture is titled “Nutritionist View of “Waste to Wealth” And The Endless Search For Animal Feed Raw Materials”.

The lecture which holds under the distinguished Chairmanship of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. I.A. Onimawo will commence at 2.00 p.m. prompt at the New University Auditorium (Tetfund).

The Profile of the Inaugural Lecturer
Prof. Sylvanus Ozem Oboh was born on 25th May, 1955 at Ogwa, Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State. He had his early education at St. John Bosco’s School and Edo College, Benin City; from 1961 – 1975. He bagged his Higher School Certificate (H.S.C.) in 1977 from Edo College, Benin City.

He was admitted into the great University of Ibadan, Ibadan where he obtained B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Agricultural Biochemistry and Animal Nutrition in 1981, 1983 and 1987 respectively.
Prof. Oboh started his working career as Livestock and Feed Mill Manager in Niger Valley Firms, Agenebode in May, 1987. He left to join College of Education, Ekiadolor as Lecturer II, in the Department of Home Economics in 1988. In February, 1989, he moved to Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria as Lecturer II, in the Department of Animal Science. In July 1987, he joined the University of Benin, Benin City as Lecturer II in the Department of Fisheries, Faculty of Agriculture.

He finally got employed in the Service of the then Bendel State University now Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma as Lecturer I in the Department of Animal Science in July 1990. He rose through the ranks to the position of Professor in October, 2006.

As an academic of very high repute, he has distinguished himself in the areas of Research Supervision and Publications as follows:

He conducted extensive research on the utilization of cassava peels for growing pigs focusing more on growth parameters and effects of peels in diet on protein metabolites. The research was sponsored by the International foundation of Sciences, Sweden, in 1983.

In collaboration with the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, (IITA) Ibadan between 1984 and 1987, he evaluated some aspects of the chemical composition of 49 varieties of sweet potato (Ipomea batatas) tubers, vines and leaves. He also carried out Nutritional Studies on oven and sun-dried sweet potato tuber, in feeding trials for Broilers (table Birds). These studies were geared to finding alternative sources of energy and feeds for poultry.

He further collaborated with the Rubber Research Institute, Iyanomo, on the use of rubber seed cake, a bye product of rubber seed oil products as protein feed for poultry and pigs between 1992-2000.

He also carried out research in alternative energy and protein sources in feeds for non-ruminant animals including poultry birds and pigs.
He successfully supervised research students at both undergraduate and graduate levels in the three Universities where he worked including Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma.
At present he has six (6) Ph.D students under his supervision.

Prof. Oboh has published several articles in local and international Journals with several Articles in Books of Abstract to his credit.

His published Books are:

Prof. Oboh represented Edo State as a delegate at Nigerian National Conference from March – August, 2014. He also recently had an award as an “Outstanding Alumnus”, University of Ibadan, Edo State Branch, Benin City. He is a member of the following Professional societies:

  1. Nigerian Society for Animal Production;
  2. Nigerian Institute of Animal Science;
  3. and He was the Editor-In-Chief, Nigerian Journal of Agriculture and Forestry (NJAF), 2008.

Prof. S.O. Oboh has been a University lecturer since 1988. He has been actively involved in design, preparation and teaching of courses in undergraduate and postgraduate levels. These courses are drawn from the areas of Nutritional Biochemistry, Monogastric Animal Production and special Biochemistry topics at M.Sc. level.

Besides academics, Prof. Oboh has made his marks in other areas like administration, farming and sports. He has held several positions at local, national and international fora amongst which are:
Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, AAU, Ekpoma – 2009 – 2011.

  • Ag. Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, 1996, 1998 and 2008-2009.
  • Member, University Commercial Farms Committee.
  • Faculty representative in Senate, 1992-1994.
  • Member, Faculty Postgraduate Committee, 1994 – 1998 and 2005 to date.
  • Chairman, Agricultural Students Field Practical Training Programme, 1992 – 1994.
  • Member, Nigeria Society for Animal Production.
  • Member, Nigerian Institute of Animal science.
  • Chairman, Council Committee on the University Agricultural Development Programme and University Commercial Farms.
  • Consultant, Global Best Food, Ikoyi, Lagos, 2000 – 2010.
  • Consultant, Genesis Farms Ltd., Benin City.
  • Consultant to GATE WAY Africa in partnership with Fedics Specialist Service of South Africa, 2004 – date.
  • Chairman, Advisory Board of Leventis Foundation School.
  • Member, Board of Trustees of Global Educational Initiative For Nigerian (GIEFON) Worldwide 2005 – date.
  • Member, Nigerian Wrestling Association, 1996 – 2000.

Prof. Oboh’s hobbies are Farming, Sports, Community Relationship and Development.

Prof. Sylvanus Ozem Oboh is a good Catholic. He is happily married to his lovely and amiable wife and friend, Mrs. Joy Oboh and they are blessed with six wonderful children.
