The 76th Inaugural Lecturer

Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma will on Thursday, 28TH February 2019 hold its 76th Inaugural lecture.  It will be delivered by Prof. Felix Moibi Okoro, Professor of Mathematics (Optimization), Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Physical Sciences.  The lecture is titled: “Networking and Optimization Theory: applicable Mathematics for Everyday Life.” The lecture which holds under the Distinguished Chairmanship of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. I.A. Onimawo is scheduled to commence at 2.30pm at the Cordelia Agbebaku Auditorium.

A PROFILE OF PROFESSOR FELIX MOIBI OKORO

Professor Felix Moibi Okoro was born in Benin-City in June 28th 1954 to Mr. B.F.B. Okoro and Madam Saratu Bello Osagie of Oloke family.

He attended African School Apapa-Lagos and Awori Ajeromi Secondary School Apapa-Lagos for his Primary and Secondary Schools.  He worked briefly with Bight Engineering Benin-city between 1977 and 1978.

Prof. F.M. Okoro got admission to Western Oregon State University, Mommouth Oregon USA in 1979, to study Accountancy.  In 1980, he was given a grant in aid for a foreign studies to study Mathematics.  Hence, he changed his course of study to Mathematics after passing the required examination.  He graduated with M.Sc. Education in 1983 from the same University.

Prof. F.M. Okoro returned to Nigeria in 1984 and did his NYSC programme in 1985/1986 in the then Ondo State University, now Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti.  Upon returning from the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), he applied and got admitted to University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria to study M.Sc. in Mathematics.  In the same year 1986, he got employed by the Niger State College of Education, Minna as a Lecturer II. In his quest for knowledge, in 1988, he completed his M.Sc. programme in Mathematics and also had his Ph.D degree in Mathematics from the same University in 1998.

While in Oregon State he saw Bendel State University, Ekpoma- Nigeria listed among the Commonwealth Universities.  He was excited about Bendel State having its own University but did not know the location. While now in Minna, he saw an advertisement for employment of academic staff by the then Bendel State University, Ekpoma.  He applied and got employed as an Assistant Lecturer in November, 1988.  He was upgraded to Lecturer II in 1990.  His promotions are as follow: Lecturer 1 1993, Senior Lecturer in 2000, Reader in 2005 and Professor in 2009.

He is a member of the following learned Societies : Nigeria Association of Mathematical Physics, Nigeria Mathematics Society; Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics and Association of computing Machinery.

In 1991 to 1993, he was the Acting Head of Department of Mathematics, 1998-2000, Acting HOD to Computer Science and Statistics, 2001-2002; 2003-2005, 2007-2008, Acting HOD, Computer Science, 2012-2015, Director, ICT and 2016-2018, Head of Department of Mathematics.

 He thought as Part-time Lecturer, Mathematics Department University of Benin, 1990-1991, Taught Engineering, Science and Education students Mathematics courses 1998 till date, Taught Computer Science courses to undergraduate student 199-2012, Taught Computer Science course to Institute of Education postgraduate students 2000 to date, Taught Computer Science course to Medical Laboratory Science postgraduate students 2000 to date, Supervised over 100 Mathematics undergraduate projects, Supervised over 150 Computer Science undergraduate projects, Supervised 13 postgraduate Diploma projects in Computer Science, Supervised 5 M.Sc. Dissertations in Mathematics, Supervised 4 M.Sc. Dissertations in Computer Science, Supervised 2 Ph.D Theses in Mathematics, Supervised 1 Ph.D Thesis in Computer Science.

He supervised Masters and Ph.D students at various Universities as follows: M.Phil Mathematics, University of Benin, Benin-city, 2009, Ph.D. Computer Science (2) Modibo Adama University of Technology, Yola, 2011, Ph.D Mathematics, University of Ilorin, Ilorin, 2011, Ph.D, M.Sc. Mathematics Nigerian Defense Academy, Kaduna, 2015, M.Sc., B.Sc. Computer Science, Kogi State University, Anyigba 2012-2016, B.Sc. Mathematics, Delta State University, Abraka, 2005-2010, B.Sc. Mathematics, Benson Idahosa University, Benin-City, 2014-2018, B.Sc. Computer Science, Samuel Adegboyega University, Ogwa 2014-2017, B.Sc. Mathematics, Joseph Ayo Babalola University, 2014-2017.   

Professor F.M. Okoro is an external Assessor to the following Universities: University of Ilorin, Dr. Kamilu Rauf, Mathematics, 2015, Samuel Adegboyega University, Dr. Akpajaro, Computer Science, 2016, Niger Delta University, Dr.(Mrs.) N.V. Olali, Mathematics, 2017, Chukwuemaka Odumagu Ojukwu University, Dr. Paul Anaeto Oraekie, Mathematics 2018, Covenant University, Dr. Alfred E. Owoloko, Mathematics 2018.

He has published over 35 articles in Mathematics and Computer Science in reputable International and National journals. Co-authored and wrote several Chapters in 10 Mathematics and Computer Science textbooks which are recommended for use in tertiary institutions. Authored 2 textbooks  in Mathematics and 1 in Computer Science. Attended several Conferences and was lead paper presenter at the Conference of Mathematical Sciences at the National Mathematical Centre, Abuja in 2013.

Also, Professor F.M. Okoro is a member of the following Committees: Business Committee of Senate, 1991-1992, University Computer Committee 1991-1992, 2003-2005, 2007-2008. University time-table Committee 2000-2002. University Curriculum Committee 2000-2002, University Sports Committee 2003-2005, University Security Committee 2015 to date.

Professor Felix Moibi Okoro is a dedicated Christian and married  with Children.
