The ceremony which was attended by many dignitaries from within and outside Edo State including parents and well wishers of the graduands was very colourful.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. D.O. Aigbomian, KSM, JP delivered an address on the occasion and a lecture titled “Retracing my Steps 33 Years later” was also delivered by Dr. Oluyombo A. Awojobi, Consultant Rural Surgeon, Awojobi Clinic, Eruwa.
Delivering his address, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. D.O. Aigbomian, KSM, JP appreciated God for the graduation of yet another set of Medical Doctors, having graduated the first set on the 16th of January, 2007. He recalled the stress the College of Medicine had passed through the teething problems, the set backs and pitfalls associated with the full accreditation of the College which finally resulted in the successful graduation of the Medical Doctors to the glory of God. He announced that the Senate of the University had approved the introduction of the Department of Nursing Sciences in the College of Medicine with effect from the 2007/2008 session. He was optimistic that the new programme would further enhance the quality of the medical programmes as well as ensure effective and quality medical service delivery to the local community in particular and the society in general.
The Vice-Chancellor used the opportunity to formally announce that the University now has a new Visitor in the person of the Executive Governor of Edo State, Senator (Prof.) O.A. Osunbor, KSC, as well as a new Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council, Ambassador Abdul-Aziz Garuba. He recalled that 22 Medical Doctors graduated in 2007 as against the 48 Medical Doctors in 2008, which represents more than a 100% increase. He congratulated the 48 graduated Medical Doctors on their successes in their final examinations and also commended them for their resilience and patience. He also thanked the Provost and other staff of the College, the Parents Consultative Forum for their various contributions in ensuring the realization of the dream and goal of the College.
In a lecture titled “Retracing my Steps 33 years Later” delivered by Dr. Oluyombo A. Awojobi, a Consultant Rural Surgeon, Awojobi Clinic, Eruwa, the guest Lecturer expressed his gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor, the Provost and the entire academic staff of the College of Medicine for the invitation and honour to deliver the lecture at the induction of the second set of Medical graduates. He gave a brief rundown of some requirements for the successful training and teaching of Medical Doctors which he said included full dedication to duties and concentration/determination on the part of both the teachers and students. He quoted Prof. E.L. Odeku, a Pioneer Neurosurgeon and former Dean of Ibadan Medical School as saying:
“The vast background of Medical knowledge existing today virtually demands that each doctor be a specialist in something by wish or by necessity, otherwise he becomes so readily overwhelmed and relatively incompetent”.
He therefore urged the graduated Medical Doctors to decide early their areas of specialty for which they must have the ability and capacity to cope. In the area of service, the Guest Lecturer advised that from the day they got a house job, the practice of disappearing during Ward rounds, out patient clinic or operating sessions should be over. He admonished them to be conscious of the fact that they would be left alone to trace blood samples and do lumbar punctures for the dozens of investigations requested on the patients and therefore they should be ready for the challenges ahead of them.
Dr. Awojobi, the guest lecturer reminded the newly graduated Medical Doctors to always remember in their clerking, prescriptions and reference notes to put the date and in emergency cases, the time. These he said could be the saving grace for their patients and for themselves in case of any Medicalegal cases. He further gave 4 cogent reasons on why they must not check out of the country in search of greener pastures abroad emphasizing that the Medical Doctors should not abandon the health need of their biological parents in searching of greener pastures abroad. He concluded the lecture by advising them to continue to maintain a cordial link with their teachers and those who could be their teachers wherever they are.
The climax of the ceremony was the Swearing-in-of the 48 Medical Doctors by the Provost, College of Medical Sciences where they subscribed to Physicians Oaths I and II.,
