ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS


Master’s Degree Programmes

Candidates who possess any of the following qualifications may be considered for admission:

  1. At least a Second Class Honours Degree of Ambrose All University, Ekpoma or any other University of recognized standing in the relevant discipline.
  2. Third Class Bachelor’s Degree plus PGD or HND and any professional qualification with appropriate PGD from a recognized University.
  3. Holders of LL.B. Second Class Honours OR Third Class Honours with a B.L. and with at least five years  post-call experience may be considered for the LL.M programme.    
  4. For Masters in French studies, holders of B.A. or B.ED (French with a minimum of Second Class Lower Division of any recognized University.

M. Phil Programmes    

Candidates who possess any of the following qualifications may be considered for admission:
  1. A graduate of Ambrose Alli University with a Master’s degree in related discipline.
  2. A graduate of any other approved University with the qualification specified in (i) above.


Transfer from M. Phil to Ph.D

A candidate with a Master’s (M.A. and’ or M.Sc.) Degree who has been registered for the degree of Master of Philosophy (M. Phil) programme for not less than two semesters may transfer to the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) subject to the following conditions:

  1. That he/she has completed the course work requirements for the M. Phil degree with an     average grade of 55 per cent.
  2. That he/she passes an oral transfer examination conducted by the Board of Postgraduate Studies of the Department on the subject of his/her research plan.

Ph.D Programmes

A graduate of Ambrose All University, Ekpoma OR of any other University of recognized standing who possesses Master’s degree appropriate to the intended course may be admitted. However, such intending candidate should have scored an average of at least 60 percent and above in his/her Master’s programme.

Departmental Requirements

Notwithstanding the above, a department may require an applicant, as a condition for admission, to undergo appropriate test interviews, examinations, and/or take appropriate pre-requisite or concrete courses.

That students, where applicable, would be made to fulfill the Ph.D qualifying examination requirement to confirm their candidature before registration of his/her titles/proposals.
 
Postgraduate Diploma Programmes

(i)    Postgraduate Diploma in Botany (PGDB)

    A Third Class Honours Degree in Botany or other Science related discipline.

(ii)    Postgraduate Diploma in Chemistry (PGDIC)

    (a)    Third Class Honours degree in Chemistry;  and any of the following:

        (1)    Industrial Chemistry
        (2)     Biochemistry
        (3)    Chemistry Education

    (b)    HND with a Credit Pass in Chemistry or other Science related discipline.


(iii)    Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Science (PGDCS)
    
    (a)    At least Third Class Honours Degree of Ambrose Alli University or any other recognized institution in a science-based discipline.  Other relevant professional qualifications may be considered on their merit.

    (b)    HND from recognized Polytechnic or College of Technology

(iv)    Education (PGDE)

    A graduate of Ambrose All University, Ekpoma OR any other University of recognized standing who possesses a good first degree classification acceptable to Senate.


(v)    Engineering (PGDENG)

    Holders of good HND in Engineering with at least four (4) years post-qualification cognate experience OR graduate in fields relevant to Engineering of any recognized University shall be considered.

(vi)    Geography and Regional Planning (PGDGRP)
    A Third Class Honours degree in Geography and Regional Planning or any other related discipline relevant to Geography from AAU or any other recognized institution.  Holders of HND/HNC from a recognized Polytechnic or College of Technology shall be considered.

(vii)    Postgraduate Diploma in Microbiology (PGDM)

    (a)    A Third Class Honours or Pass degree in Microbiology from Ambrose Alli University or any other University of recognized standing in the relevant disciplines such as Biology, Biochemistry and Food Technology.

    (b)    Holders of FIMILS and AIMLS in Science related discipline.

(viii)    Postgraduate Diploma in Zoology (PGDZ)

     Third Class Honours degree in Zoology and other related Science discipline.


PERIOD OF STUDY


The duration of the courses to be offered shall be as follows:
 
(i)    Master’s Degree Programme (Full-Time)

The duration may vary from Department to Department, provided it shall be in the range of a minimum of three (3) semesters and not more than six (6) semesters.  On the application of the student and on the recommendation of the Departmental Committee, the Board may extend the period of study for a period of not more than two (2) semesters.

(ii)    Master’s Programme (Part-Time)

The duration shall be in the range of a minimum of six (6) semesters and maximum of eight (8) semesters.  Extension may be allowed for not more than two (2) semesters.
    
(iii)   Ph.D Programme (Full-Time)

    The duration shall be a minimum of six (6) semesters, and a maximum of ten (ten) semesters.
    
(iv)    Ph.D Programme (Part-Time)

    The duration shall not be less than ten (10) semesters and a maximum of sixteen (16) semesters.


Note:  In exceptional cases, an extension of not more than two (2) semesters may be approved Senate on the recommendation of the Board for all the Postgraduate programmes.

(v)    Post-Graduate Diploma Programmes

    The duration shall not be less than two (2) semesters and not more than four (4) semesters.


METHOD OF APPLICATION


(a)    Applicants shall write or come in person for application forms with non-refundable fees of N10,000.00 (Ten Thousand Naira) only in Bank Drafts made payable to Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma.  Candidates should indicate at the back of the Bank Drafts their names, the degree programme desired, and the     discipline applied for. The Bank drafts should be taken to the University Bursary Department for Official University receipt.

Also, N2,000.00 (Two thousand Naira) only cash is payable to the School of Postgraduate Studies, being t he cost of a copy of the Handbook.

(b)    Each completed application form should be accompanied with three  N50.00 stamped self-addressed foolscap envelopes marked “SPS Form 2007/2008” at the     left corner for further correspondence.
 
(c)    Application Forms without transcripts and NYSC discharge or exemption Certificates, shall NOT be processed.

All completed application forms with all the relevant enclosures should be returned to:
