The department of Zoology offers courses leading to award of B.Sc. degree in Zoology

PHILOSOPHY, OBJECTIVE AND SCOPE

The programme is designed to adequately expose the students to the general and practical education in zoology. Students are thus trained to respond to the need of the Nigerian society through training/education in areas of general and applied biology, Invertebrates and vertebrate Zoology, Developmental Biology, Histology, Genetics, Animal Ecology, Nematology, Animal Systematic, Animal Behaviour, General physiology, pollution ad toxicology.

Students are also required to take mandatory Mathematics, Computer Science, Chemistry, Microbiology and Physics courses. Elective courses are taken in Languages and Agriculture.

Areas in Zoology which are of a particular National importance and interest such as fisheries, Biology, Parasitology, Entomology and Environmental Studies are greatly emphasized. General comparative Physiology, Hydrobiology/Fisheries Biology and Entomology are offered as specialist courses in the final year and each student is required to specialize on one of these areas.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENT

Admission is by UME or by direct entry. Candidates admitted by UME undergo a four-year degree programme while those admitted by direct entry do a three-year programme.

UME
Candidates MUST possess GCE/WASC ‘O’ level with passes at credit level in at least five subjects including Biology, Chemistry, English Language and Mathematics and a pass in Physics, in not more than two sittings.

Waiver: A pass in Biology with a credit pass in Agricultural Science or Health Science may be considered.

Direct Entry
Candidate for direct admission (200 level) must in addition to the above requirements, passes at (i) HSC or GCE ‘A’ level in Biology/Agricultural Science/Botany/Zoology and Chemistry. (ii) OND/NCE with grades not less than merit in related subjects.
