Officials of the West African Students Union led by its President, Comrade Basil Onuorah was in the University on Tuesday, 24th July, 2007 to honour the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. D.O. Aigbomian, KSM, JP. as a patron of the Union. In his speech, after the opening prayers said by Miss Nwosu Juliana at the instance of the Vice-Chancellor, the President, Comrade Basil Onuorah said that they were in the University to honour the Vice-Chancellor with the patronship award having being adjudged fit for the award by the Union.
He gave a brief history of the Union, which he said was established for the welfare of students at the West African Regional level and that the Union among other things all mirrors the activities of individuals or group of persons or organization within the Region with a view to rewarding them adequately. According to the President, the Union had for long been monitoring the activities in Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma. He said that the Union was particularly happy with the drastic reduction of cult activities and other related crimes in Ambrose Alli University, as well as the peace currently being enjoyed in the University. He attributed all these to the leadership qualities of the Vice-Chancellor whom he described as God fearing, humble and a distinguished man of God. He added further that the Vice-Chancellor was the first Vice-Chancellor in all the West African Universities to be so honoured by the Union. Thereafter, the President presented a Certificate of Patronship on a wall clock on behalf of the Union to the Vice-Chancellor in recognition of his contribution to the growth of education and the development of the youths. Responding, the Vice-Chancellor welcomed the team to the University and thanked God for their safe arrival in Ekpoma. He thanked the Union for the honour done him with the award and wondered how his name was chosen for the award. He stated that on assumption of office in the year 2004, he was determined to make a mark on the system and that his dream was being realized through the collective effort and support of all staff and students of the University. He observed that Nigerian students have attained maturity; hence they now resort to dialogue in resolving issues in place of their erstwhile antagonistic stance and aluta approach. He described the Student Union officials of Ambrose Alli University as very wonderful who had co-operated with the Univeristy Management to ensure smooth academic activities on Campus. He described this administration as student-friendly and assured that his administration would do its best to ensure that there is no disruption of academic activities as he was not always happy any time such avoidable disruptions occur. He enjoined all students to be well behaved, as they are the future leaders of tomorrow. In his closing remarks, the President, Comrade Basil Onuorah thanked the Vice-Chancellor for the warm reception accorded his team and urged him to continue with his good works, assuring that God will continue to guide him and his team. On ground to receive the team were the Vice-Chancellor, the Deputy Registrars, Vice-Chancellor Office, Mr. E.I.
